Minecraft Architecture New Worlds
Minecraft is more than just a game, it is a creative tool that allows players to create and experience feats of engineering, amazing structures, and epic works of art. Explore modern architectural techniques. Find out what it’s like to construct cool buildings on Mars. Build castles and other structures out of your favorite high fantasy books and movies. With an inspired mind, design and build a Wonder of this World or Another. In addition, working together, students learn the meaning of good digital citizenship.

Chinese Language & Culture I
The Chinese I Class is specifically designed for young elementary school children who are beginning their journey of learning Chinese. This comprehensive course covers various aspects of the language, starting with the structure of Chinese words and the pronunciation of tones. The carefully selected topics include greetings, daily routines, personal introductions, school subjects and facilities, numbers and dates, parts of the body, countries and languages, everyday articles and stationery, houses and rooms, transportation, articles found in a house, colors and clothes, animals, and more.

Throughout the class sessions, students will also have the opportunity to explore Chinese calligraphy and immerse themselves in relevant Chinese cultures, such as traditional customs, food, and holidays like the Chinese Zodiac New Year and the Mid-autumn Festival. Additionally, they will learn about Chinese solar terms and delve into the rich history of China.

By the end of this series, students will have gained a profound understanding of Chinese culture. They will be able to recognize approximately 50 to 100 simple Chinese characters and develop effective communication skills in Chinese from an early age.

Budding Builders
Ever wonder what you can create with a pile of bricks? Let your imagination run wild while you invent, innovate, and build. Problem solve with teammates or explore new designs on your own! All children will have time to create something new and share ideas while making new friends! Throughout the session there will be optional lego challenges and lots of time for free play.

Card Sharks
Do you like to play cards? Each week we will learn new card games and have time to play together. We will build skills in math and have lots of fun!

Guzheng (Chinese Zither)
The Chinese Zither, is a traditional plucked instrument that holds a significant place in Chinese music and culture. Its name translates to "ancient zither" in Mandarin, reflecting its long history and cultural heritage. The Guzheng class not only focuses on learning how to play Guzheng, but also includes the exploration of various Chinese traditional musical instruments and the appreciation of Chinese traditional music. Through the course, students will acquire fundamental knowledge and basic finger techniques of the Guzheng playing.

Based on this, students will then learn to play a variety of Chinese and Western tunes. They will practice to develop skills for ensemble playing. Additionally, throughout the classes, students will have the opportunity to learn about other traditional Chinese instruments and enjoy different styles of Chinese music.

Chess Club I
Study chess with renowned chess player, coach, and International Master David Vigorito. Chess has tremendous benefits as a learning aid and helps students with concentration, self-discipline, and self-confidence. Chess develops skills which traditional methods tend to ignore, such as critical thinking in a changing environment and problem solving. Beginners welcome!

Come learn the basics and beyond of chess with International Master David Vigorito. Classes will accommodate all levels. Kids should know how the pieces move, but they may still be relatively new to chess. Classes will include instruction, puzzles, playing time, and game review.

Building upon their existing knowledge, the course focuses on expanding vocabulary and phrases while placing emphasis on learning pinyin, the romanized pronunciation system for Chinese characters. Students will also learn to use simple daily expressions, practice drawing characters, and explore sentence patterns. Through question-and-answer dialogues, they will develop the ability to modify sentence content.

In addition to language skills, students will engage in Chinese calligraphy, immersing themselves in the art form. They will also delve into traditional Chinese customs and learn about famous stories from Chinese history. Upon completion of this series, students will be able to talk about typical Chinese traditions, customs, and historical stories. They will have the ability to recognize and write approximately 300 to 500 Chinese characters, enabling them to express themselves in Chinese on basic daily subjects.

Fun with Things That Fly
Ready, set, take off! From paper airplanes to rockets, we’ll make all sorts of flying inventions while exploring aerodynamics and how things move through the air. Students make, test, and reinvent catapults, kites, parachutes, and more as we explore the laws of physics and the forces that keep objects afloat. Lessons will be just “plane” fun!

Minecraft Parkour
Learn how to create and run obstacle courses in Minecraft, including block hopping, disappearing floors, and more! Using Redstone programming and circuits, students will learn to create challenging escape rooms, testing their agility and puzzle solving skills!

Yoga and Mindfulness
Yoga and mindfulness techniques are very important life skills that can help students succeed in the world.The class will propose moments of conversation, a routine of flow yoga postures, breathing techniques and some relaxation. Learning techniques for self-health, relaxation, and inner fulfillment can help navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease.  The goal of this class is to teach students how to independently do their own routine of wellness based on their personal needs.

Pike Robotics Club
Winter and Spring Term Commitment

The Pike Robotics Club will be based on the First Lego League 2023 mission, Masterpiece. Students will be asked to design, build and program robots that can complete a series of individual tasks. Students will work in small teams where we will be emphasizing the FLL Core
